OM SYSTEM PEN 2026 — Compact Micro Four Thirds Camera for Travel, Street Photography and Video

OM SYSTEM PEN silver Micro Four Thirds camera with M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III lens

The OM SYSTEM PEN brings one of photography's longest-running compact-camera ideas into a distinctly modern mirrorless system. Built around a 20.4MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, phase-detection autofocus, 5-axis stabilisation and a compact rangefinder-style body, the new PEN is aimed squarely at everyday, travel and street photography.

It also represents an important transition for the PEN name. The concept dates back to the original Olympus PEN of 1959, but this is the first new PEN camera introduced under the OM SYSTEM brand.

The philosophy remains familiar: provide a capable interchangeable-lens camera that photographers are actually willing to carry.

The PEN Idea Returns to Its Roots

The original Olympus PEN was created around a simple principle: serious photography did not necessarily require a large camera.

More than six decades later, that philosophy is arguably even more relevant.

Modern interchangeable-lens cameras have become enormously capable, but bodies, lenses and accessories can quickly turn a theoretically portable system into a large kit.

The new PEN goes in the opposite direction.

Its flat-top, rangefinder-style body is designed to remain small enough for everyday carry while retaining interchangeable lenses, a viewfinder and physical camera controls.

20.4MP Micro Four Thirds Sensor

The camera uses a 20.4MP 4/3 Live MOS sensor.

Micro Four Thirds uses a smaller sensor than APS-C or full-frame systems, but that becomes part of the PEN's design advantage because lenses can also remain relatively compact.

The format provides a 2x field-of-view conversion relative to 35mm full frame.

A 14mm lens therefore produces approximately the same angle of view as a 28mm lens on full frame, while 42mm behaves approximately like 84mm.

This is why the compact 14-42mm kit zoom can cover such a useful everyday range without becoming physically large.

TruePic IX Processing

The PEN uses OM SYSTEM's TruePic IX image processor.

The processor supports both conventional image processing and many of the computational features that have become an important part of the OM SYSTEM ecosystem.

This is significant because the PEN is not simply being positioned as a basic compact body.

Several capabilities normally associated with more advanced OM cameras have moved into this smaller platform.

121-Point Phase-Detection Autofocus

The PEN incorporates a 121-point all-cross-type phase-detection autofocus system.

Phase detection improves the camera's ability to determine both the direction and amount of focus adjustment required, making continuous autofocus more effective with moving subjects.

The system also incorporates AI-based detection for:

  • people
  • dogs
  • cats

For an everyday camera, those subjects matter considerably more than an enormous list of specialised detection modes.

Travel, family, street photography and pets are precisely the situations in which a small camera is likely to be carried regularly.

5-Axis Stabilisation — Up to 5.5 Stops

One of the strongest features is built-in 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilisation.

OM SYSTEM quotes up to approximately 5.5 stops of compensation.

That can help photographers work at slower shutter speeds while handholding the camera, particularly in:

  • evening street photography
  • interiors
  • travel photography
  • museums and galleries
  • low-light everyday scenes

Stabilisation is also valuable for video because it reduces the visible movement associated with handheld recording.

A Built-In OLED Viewfinder

The PEN includes a built-in 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder.

That separates it from camera designs that rely entirely on the rear display.

A viewfinder is particularly useful in bright sunlight, where rear-screen visibility can become difficult, and it also provides a more traditional photographic experience for users who prefer composing at eye level.

Computational Photography Without a Computer

OM SYSTEM has increasingly used computational photography to perform techniques directly inside the camera that would traditionally require filters, multiple exposures or post-processing.

The PEN incorporates several of these functions.

High Res Shot

High Res Shot can generate approximately 50MP images by combining multiple sensor-shifted exposures.

This is particularly useful for relatively static subjects such as landscapes, architecture, products and detailed interiors.

Live ND

Live ND simulates the effect of a neutral-density filter up to approximately ND16.

This allows photographers to experiment with motion blur in subjects such as water, clouds and moving people without always attaching a physical ND filter.

Focus Stacking

Focus Stacking combines images focused at different distances to increase the apparent depth of field.

It is particularly useful for:

  • macro photography
  • food
  • small objects
  • flowers
  • product photography

HDR and Multiple Exposure

HDR assists with scenes containing large differences between bright and dark areas, while Multiple Exposure allows several images to be combined creatively inside the camera.

These features reinforce the PEN's emphasis on producing finished creative images without requiring every photograph to pass through a desktop editing workflow.

Colour and Monochrome Profiles

Another important part of the PEN concept is its in-camera creative control.

Users can create personalised colour and monochrome recipes rather than relying only on generic picture modes.

The camera can store multiple configurations and transfer or share creative profiles through the OI.Share application.

This places the PEN in an increasingly popular category of cameras designed around the idea that colour rendering can be part of the shooting process rather than something added afterwards.

393g for Everyday Carry

The PEN weighs approximately 393g including battery and memory card, while the body itself is approximately 344g.

Dimensions are approximately:

  • 125.8mm wide
  • 74.5mm high
  • 43.3mm deep

Those dimensions matter because an everyday camera succeeds only if people actually take it with them.

For travel and street photography, reducing size can often matter more in practice than gaining another incremental specification that requires a substantially larger system.

Weather Resistance

The camera offers IPX1-rated splash resistance when used with a compatible splashproof OM SYSTEM lens.

This does not make the camera waterproof, but it gives the system additional resilience when weather changes during travel or outdoor photography.

Matching the body with a weather-resistant compact lens therefore makes particular sense.

OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III

The newly updated 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III is the natural compact zoom companion for the PEN.

Its Micro Four Thirds focal range gives an angle of view equivalent to approximately 28-84mm on a full-frame camera.

That covers:

  • wide everyday scenes
  • travel
  • street photography
  • family photography
  • environmental portraits
  • short-telephoto portraits

The lens weighs only approximately 125g, keeping the combined system exceptionally portable.

Close Focusing with the 14-42mm

At 14mm, the lens can focus as close as approximately 0.13m and reaches approximately 0.26x magnification.

That adds useful flexibility for everyday details such as food, objects, plants and travel subjects without carrying a separate close-up lens.

At the 42mm end, minimum focus increases to approximately 0.30m.

IPX1 Lens and Body Combination

The updated 14-42mm also adds IPX1 splash resistance when used with a compatible OM SYSTEM or Olympus splashproof body.

This is an important detail because weather protection works as a system.

A sealed camera body provides limited practical benefit if the attached lens is the weak point.

The PEN and 14-42mm III therefore make a logically matched lightweight travel combination.

Body Only or 14-42mm Kit?

Wex lists the new PEN in four primary configurations:

  • black body
  • silver body
  • black body with 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III
  • silver body with 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III

The body-only configuration makes sense for photographers who already own Micro Four Thirds lenses or who want to build the system around a compact prime.

The 14-42mm configuration makes more sense as a general-purpose starting point because it immediately provides wide-angle through short-telephoto coverage.

Micro Four Thirds Gives the PEN Room to Grow

Unlike a premium compact camera with a permanently attached lens, the PEN belongs to the mature Micro Four Thirds ecosystem.

That opens the system to a large range of compatible lenses covering:

  • small primes
  • ultra-wide photography
  • portraiture
  • macro
  • travel zooms
  • telephoto photography
  • wildlife

This creates an interesting middle ground between a fixed-lens compact and a physically larger interchangeable-lens system.

4K, C4K and Vertical Video

The PEN is not designed primarily as a cinema camera, but its video specification is considerably more capable than a simple stills-first compact.

It supports:

  • UHD 4K
  • DCI/C4K
  • Full HD
  • S&Q slow and fast motion
  • vertical video
  • OM-Log400
  • OM-Cinema1 and OM-Cinema2 profiles

This makes it relevant to travel creators and photographers who increasingly produce both still images and short-form video from the same camera.

An External Microphone Input Changes the Video Potential

The PEN includes a 3.5mm external microphone input.

That is important because sound quality is one of the biggest limitations of relying entirely on a camera's small built-in microphones.

A compact microphone such as the RØDE VideoMicro II is particularly appropriate for this kind of small camera because it weighs approximately 39g, uses a 3.5mm TRS connection and does not require its own battery. The PEN's 3.5mm microphone input supports plug-in power, which the VideoMicro II requires.

PEN vs Premium Fixed-Lens Compact

The PEN occupies an interesting position relative to cameras such as the Leica D-Lux 8.

A fixed-lens premium compact is extremely convenient because the camera and lens are permanently matched.

The PEN instead gives up some of that absolute simplicity in exchange for lens choice.

A photographer can start with the 14-42mm and later add:

  • a small bright prime for street photography
  • a portrait lens
  • a macro lens
  • a telephoto

That makes it better suited to someone who wants a compact camera today but does not want to be locked permanently into one lens.

For another approach to compact serious photography, see Leica D-Lux 8 Digital Camera — Classic Leica Character in a Compact Everyday Form.

Who Is the OM SYSTEM PEN For?

The new PEN looks particularly well suited to:

  • travel photographers
  • street photographers
  • people moving beyond smartphone photography
  • existing Micro Four Thirds users wanting a smaller body
  • family and everyday photographers
  • creative photographers interested in in-camera colour recipes
  • hybrid creators producing stills and short-form video
  • photographers who prioritise portability over maximum sensor size

Who Might Prefer Something Else?

The PEN is less likely to suit photographers whose priorities are:

  • maximum full-frame depth-of-field control
  • extreme high-ISO performance
  • high-end professional cinema production
  • large integrated grips and extensive physical controls
  • specialised high-speed sports bodies

Those are different design priorities rather than shortcomings in the PEN concept.

Final Verdict

The OM SYSTEM PEN makes sense because it does not try to turn a compact camera into a miniature flagship.

Instead, it builds modern autofocus, stabilisation, computational photography, creative profiles and useful video capability around the original PEN principle: a serious camera should be easy enough to carry that it becomes part of everyday life.

The 20.4MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, 121-point phase-detection AF, 5-axis stabilisation, OLED viewfinder and compact body provide a substantial photographic foundation.

The new 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III strengthens that concept by creating a weather-resistant, lightweight 28-84mm-equivalent everyday system.

And because the PEN retains interchangeable lenses, it can evolve well beyond the original kit as the photographer's interests change.

For travel, street photography, everyday life and hybrid stills/video work, that combination of portability and flexibility is the real attraction.
