The arrival of the Sony FX5 makes the Cinema Line buying decision considerably more interesting. The FX3 is already established as a compact full-frame filmmaking camera. The FX6 has become a familiar production tool for documentary, corporate, commercial and location work. The new FX5 now sits directly between them — but it does not simply split the difference.

Instead, each camera now represents a different way of building a professional Sony video system.

The FX3 prioritises mobility, in-body stabilisation and a very small riggable body. The FX6 prioritises traditional cinema-camera operation, built-in electronic variable ND, SDI connectivity and rapid exposure control on location. The FX5 introduces something different again: a newer stacked sensor, internal X-OCN RAW recording, 5K Open Gate, advanced autofocus, strong networking and a compact body that can remain minimal or be built into a more serious production rig.

That means choosing between the Sony FX5, FX6 and FX3 is no longer simply about paying more for more camera.

Quick Verdict — FX5, FX6 or FX3?

Choose the Sony FX3 if compact size, handheld shooting, gimbal use, IBIS and a minimal production kit matter more than internal RAW, built-in ND or SDI.

Choose the Sony FX5 if internal X-OCN RAW, 5K Open Gate, a newer stacked sensor, IBIS and a compact but expandable production body are the strongest priorities.

For many filmmakers, the FX5 will look like the most technically advanced option of the three. That does not automatically make it the best production camera for every job.

Where the FX5 Fits Between the FX3 and FX6

The easiest way to misunderstand the FX5 is to think of Sony's Cinema Line as a simple ladder.

Under that logic, the FX3 would be the entry point, the FX5 the middle model and the FX6 the superior camera.

Real production does not work that neatly.

The FX5 is newer than both cameras and introduces technology neither of them currently offers, particularly internal X-OCN RAW and full-frame Open Gate recording.

FX5 Open Gate Is More Important Than the 5K Number

The headline specification is 5K, but the shape of the captured image may matter more than the number of pixels.

The FX5 supports full-frame 3:2 Open Gate recording when using X-OCN.

That means more of the sensor area can be captured rather than committing the entire production to a standard 16:9 frame during acquisition.

This is particularly useful now that a single production frequently needs multiple deliverables.

A commercial shoot may need:

  • 16:9 master footage

Neither the FX6 nor FX3 currently provides an equivalent full-frame Open Gate recording mode.

Internal X-OCN Is the FX5's Strongest Production Argument

The FX5 is the first FX-series Cinema Line camera to record Sony's X-OCN RAW format internally.

This is a major distinction.

With the FX6, RAW acquisition requires an external recorder connected through the camera's 12G-SDI output.

The FX3 can provide 16-bit RAW output through HDMI to a compatible external recorder.

Consider an interview subject walking from an interior through a doorway into daylight.

Or documentary filming where clouds repeatedly move across the sun.

Or a commercial sequence moving between shade and direct light.

With the FX6, ND can become part of normal exposure control without adding filters to the front of the lens.

The FX5 and FX3 require external ND solutions when neutral-density filtration is needed.

Those solutions can be excellent — screw-in filters, magnetic systems, matte-box filters or variable ND — but they add another physical component to the rig.

For documentary and run-and-gun production, the FX6's internal variable ND remains one of the strongest reasons to choose it even after the arrival of the newer FX5.

FX5 and FX3 Fight Back with IBIS

The FX5 and FX3 both use 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilisation.

The FX6 does not use the same in-body stabilisation architecture.

That gives the smaller cameras an obvious advantage for certain handheld workflows.

IBIS can help when shooting:

  • small rigs without shoulder support

The FX3's greatest advantage is not a codec.

It is its shape.

The body weighs approximately 630g without battery and card and is compact enough to be used in situations where a conventional cinema camera begins to feel intrusive.

The FX3 can work particularly well for:

This is why the FX3 remains relevant even though the FX5 is newer and more capable in several technical areas.

If a production needs the smallest practical full-frame Cinema Line body, the FX3 still has a very clear purpose.

FX5 Is Surprisingly Close to FX3 Size

The FX5 body is also extremely compact for its capabilities.

Sony lists the body-only weight at approximately 643g, which places it remarkably close to the FX3 body weight.

That means the FX5 is not simply a miniature FX6.

4K 120p Is Available Across All Three — But Not in Exactly the Same Way

All three cameras can reach 4K 120p in supported recording modes.

That is useful for:

  • commercial detail shots
  • music videos

The FX6 can record UHD 4K at up to 120p and Full HD at even higher frame rates.

The FX3 can also record UHD 4K at up to 120p.

Reliable autofocus reduces one variable in that workload.

The FX3 shares the high-sensitivity philosophy of Sony's low-resolution full-frame video architecture and can operate at very high ISO values when necessary.

The FX5 changes the formula by using three Base ISO settings: 800, 4000 and 12800.

This creates an interesting middle point.

Instead of simply choosing between a normal and high-sensitivity base, FX5 operators gain a third option for intermediate lighting conditions.

That can be particularly useful in interiors where ISO 800 requires more lighting but ISO 12800 is unnecessarily high.

Again, that does not mean ISO specifications determine image quality by themselves.

Lighting, exposure, lens aperture, grading and noise-reduction workflow still matter.

Sony lists more than 15 stops of latitude for the FX5 in S-Log3 and 15+ stops for both the FX6 and FX3 under the manufacturer's specified conditions.

That makes all three cameras suitable for serious grading workflows.

The practical difference is often less about a claimed number of stops and more about how the camera fits into the complete exposure and post-production process.

The FX6's internal ND can make protecting aperture and shutter settings easier on location.

Not every project needs extensive grading.

S-Cinetone remains important across Sony's Cinema Line because it provides a finished-looking image with natural skin tones and controlled contrast without requiring a full log-to-delivery grading pipeline.

S-Log3 remains the stronger choice when greater grading flexibility is required.

FX6 Wins for SDI-Centred Production

The FX6 includes 12G-SDI connectivity.

This is a major distinction for professional production environments.

SDI connections use locking BNC connectors and are designed for reliable video transport across professional rigs, monitors, recorders, video villages and production infrastructure.

HDMI is extremely useful, but it is physically less robust for some demanding camera builds.

The FX6 offers built-in variable ND, SDI and a body designed from the beginning around professional location operation.

For a documentary filmmaker constantly moving between unpredictable lighting conditions, the FX6's electronic ND may save more time every day than internal RAW ever does.

For a documentary filmmaker producing premium material that must also be repurposed for several aspect ratios, the FX5's Open Gate capability may become more valuable.

There is no universal answer.

FX5 vs FX6 for Commercial Production

The FX5 becomes particularly interesting for branded content and commercial production.

Internal X-OCN allows high-quality RAW acquisition without requiring an external recorder, while Open Gate provides reframing flexibility for modern campaign deliverables.

A single shoot increasingly needs to supply content for television, websites, YouTube, vertical social platforms and digital advertising.

That is precisely where Open Gate can justify additional data.

The FX6 still becomes attractive when the camera is operating inside a larger conventional production environment where SDI, built-in ND, established rigging and predictable on-set operation matter more than sensor-format flexibility.

FX3 Is Still Excellent for Gimbals and Vehicle Rigs

The smallest camera is often the best camera when equipment has to move.

A lighter rig reduces the amount of mass a gimbal motor needs to control.

It can also make car mounts, suction systems, sliders, small jibs and confined-space setups easier to manage.

The FX3 therefore remains extremely relevant as a specialised B-camera even in productions where an FX5 or FX6 is the main camera.

FX5 Could Become the Strongest All-Rounder

The FX5 has perhaps the widest spread of capabilities.

It can remain a compact body.

It can gain the dedicated XLR handle.

It can record conventional XAVC.

It can move into internal X-OCN.

It can shoot 5K Open Gate.

It has IBIS.

It has advanced autofocus.

It has fast networking.

It can be configured for anamorphic monitoring.

That breadth may make it the easiest camera of the three to use across several different production types.

But being the strongest all-rounder is not the same as being the strongest specialist.

FX6 Remains the Stronger Specialist for Fast Professional Operation

There is a reason the FX6 continues to appear in documentary, broadcast, factual, commercial and corporate environments.

Its feature set solves practical production problems.

Built-in variable ND means exposure can change without touching the lens.

SDI means robust integration into professional monitoring and recording systems.

XLR audio is part of the normal operating configuration.

The larger shape gives controls room to exist where a camera operator expects them.

Those advantages do not disappear because a newer camera records a higher-resolution RAW format.

FX3 Remains the Stronger Specialist for Mobility

The FX3 also remains a specialist.

Its specialism is being small.

A camera that can move between handheld work, a gimbal, a vehicle mount and a travel bag with minimal reconfiguration solves a different problem from the FX6.

That distinction becomes especially valuable for solo operators.

RAW sounds inherently superior.

Sometimes it is the correct format.

Sometimes it is simply unnecessary data.

X-OCN makes sense when:

  • highlight and shadow recovery are important

  • turnaround is extremely fast

Internal RAW is valuable because it is available when required, not because it needs to be used for every recording.

Do You Actually Need Open Gate?

Open Gate has become more relevant as video distribution has fragmented across multiple aspect ratios.

If every project is delivered exclusively in 16:9, the advantage becomes smaller.

If one shoot must serve horizontal and vertical platforms, Open Gate can materially improve reframing options.

This is particularly useful for:

Do You Actually Need Built-In ND?

Anyone dismissing the FX6 because it is older should spend a day filming changing outdoor light before dismissing electronic variable ND.

Maintaining a chosen aperture while exposure changes continuously is an enormous operational convenience.

The need becomes especially clear when working with fast lenses and controlled depth of field.

A camera body is only one part of the budget.

An FX5 build may need:

  • large storage capacity for X-OCN
  • external ND or matte box

An FX3 setup may require:

All three can produce excellent interview footage.

The FX3 works well for compact one-person setups.
